the instruments and voices swelled. he listened as they dropped like
raindrops all around him, the rain coming in flurries as the sounds
grew. he imagined that raincloud covering the entire earth so that
everywhere you went it was pouring pouring sound. around the globe
the water rose. he thought he'd be able to make it longer than most
people; he had been swimming for most of his life. although this proved
to be true, he did not last much longer than the others. once they
could no longer touch the soft land below the growing pool many of them
gave up and sank. he kept floating, treading all the sound around him
because it was the last importance. heads fell rapidly under water
until only a few could be seen above, then a couple, then only himself.
he reached for the volume and turned it down.
