firecracker

firecracker

by chris.

he lifted the pickaxe up and gripped it firmly in his hands,
testing it to see how heavy it was. he turned it so the sharp,
pointed side was aimed up towards the sky and held it out in
front of him so that it was perpendicular to his body. his
arms quivered a little with the weight, but he held it there,
staring at the head.

after taking a deep breath, he swung it up over his head toward
his back, making an upside-down 'U' in the air above him. the
sharp pickaxe slid into his back, pushing his spinal chord to
the right a little bit to make room. bone chipped off his spine
and was thrust further into his body as the steel went into him.
it pushed the flecks of bone into his heart with itself and he
fell forward onto the ground as the heart burst open like a red
firecracker covering the night sky, his hands still gripping the
pickaxe's handle behind his head.
